Oral Myology for Snoring

Snoring occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in the throat causing the tissues to vibrate as one breathes, which creates irritating sounds. The irregular airflow may be caused by a passageway blockage and may influence the soft palate and uvula to collapse.

The principle behind Oral Myology (OM) Therapy is that working the orofacial muscles with targeted exercises can help to tone and strengthen the tissue and train it to remain in place so the airway will remain unobstructed. Many of the exercises focus on strengthening the tongue, while others focus on toning the airway itself, through a series of vocalization, breathing, and swallowing exercises.

By using sequential exercises to develop the proper tongue rest position and swallowing, activating the palatoglossus and genioglossus muscle, developing a lip seal and normalizing the breathing, the patient’s snoring frequency and intensity will reduce. In fact, research has shown that Orofacial Myology can reduce sleep apnoea (AHI) by 50% in adults and 62% in children as well as reduce the severity of oxygen desaturation, snoring, and sleepiness in adults.

Therefore we strongly believe that it is an ideal adjunctive therapy to the snoring laser treatment that we provide at Snoring Laser Care.
